Rigid packaging and containers can only do so much for your products. At least, that’s what the increasing move towards more flexible pouch packaging suggests. But why are more and more businesses and sectors turning to it as an alternative?
Below, we’ll investigate pouch packaging in closer detail to learn more about its benefits, the different industries using it across their product range and how our own packaging solutions can support your commercial goals.
What Makes Pouch Packaging a Smart Packaging Solution?
When we refer to pouch packaging, we’re talking about flexible packaging made from thin films, often laminated together to protect what’s inside. It’s durable and protective, but crucially, it’s low in weight and uses far less material than rigid alternatives. Pouches come in an array of formats, including stand-up, flat-based and spout versions, and in three broad material families:
- Conventional: traditional mixed-material laminates such as PET/PE. Combining different plastics gives excellent protection, but the layers can’t be separated, so these pouches are not recyclable.
- Recyclable: mono-material structures made from a single polymer family, PE or PP. They can be recycled where flexible packaging collection and recycling facilities exist, and are designed with the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) in mind. Our recyclable range is independently certified against Interzero’s Made for Recycling criteria.
- Compostable: a separate range made from certified compostable films and papers, tested to EN 13432 and certified by TÜV Austria for home and industrial composting. Mono-material pouches are not compostable, and compostable pouches don’t belong in plastic recycling, so the right choice depends on your product and where it’s sold.
The above only hints at pouch packaging’s capabilities. Let’s break down the benefits in more detail to explore what makes it a smart packaging solution.
Space-saving
Boxes, cans and jars offer protection, but their bulk takes up space in warehouses and on store shelves. In comparison, pouches are far more compact, and empty pouches are delivered flat, so far more fit on a pallet, cutting inbound shipping and storage costs as a result.
Lightweight but durable
They may be light, but pouch packaging is also hard-wearing. Their laminated structures can stand up to scuffs and tears, preserving their visual finishes whether they’re in transit or being handled by customers. Built with the right barrier films and seals, they keep contents protected from moisture and oxygen, and, with a metallised layer, from light too, maintaining quality throughout the product’s shelf life.
Customisable
Whether it’s for form or function reasons, pouch packaging can be customised in all sorts of different ways. Flexographic, gravure and digital printing make it easy to print straight onto the packaging itself with bold colours and graphics to suit your business’ branding, and of course, you can choose the shape, size and features to accommodate your products. Digital print also makes short runs and multiple designs affordable, which is ideal for smaller brands, seasonal lines and product trials. Our My Pouch by Tyler service makes this simple, with low minimum orders, no origination costs and fast delivery. From a business perspective, meanwhile, bolder packaging has the potential to stand out from competitors wherever it’s stocked instore.
Lower environmental impact
Since pouch packaging uses less material than rigid alternatives, its reduced weight helps businesses cut emissions during transport. Tyler’s pouches are also available in recyclable mono-material and certified compostable options, giving businesses lower-impact choices to suit how their products are used and disposed of. In a third-party verified life cycle assessment of 1 million 2kg bags, switching from a conventional PET/PETMET/PE laminate to our recyclable structure was estimated to reduce mineral resource use by 31%.
Consumer friendly
Thanks to their array of zippers, resealable spouts and easy-tear openings, pouch packaging puts convenience first, all while helping to keep contents fresh after opening. Easy to dispense and reseal without creating mess, stand-up formats sit upright on shelves and in cupboards while taking up less room than rigid containers.
Versatile
The range of films and features available also makes pouch packaging highly versatile. From food for humans and pets alike to health supplements such as protein powders, garden products and cleaning & household goods, this kind of packaging serves a wide range of industries, catering to their needs with ease.
How Different Industries are Using Pouch Packaging
Versatile and adaptable, explore pouch packaging’s use across different industries in more detail below.
Pet Food
By using moisture-resistant films and resealable zips, pet food brands can preserve the flavour and freshness of dry kibble, air-dried treats and powdered supplements long after the pouch has been opened. For wet food, retort pouches offer a lighter alternative to tins (more on these below).

Health & Sports Nutrition
With protein powders, vitamins and other supplements to keep in tip-top condition, the structure of pouch packaging reduces overall packaging weight, without compromising on the oxygen and moisture protection required for long-lasting shelf life.

Lawn & Gardening
Items like seeds and bulbs need to stay fresh and conveniently accessible, while mulch and compost have to remain moisture-free for optimal performance. And across rough and rugged daily use, the packaging itself must stand up to wear and tear. Fortunately, tough laminated pouches are built to handle exactly that.

Food
Used to package the likes of cereals, grains, snacks, spices, dried fruit, and sauces, many of our food packaging customers use stand up pouches across their products. Not only does this mean they hold their shape for optimal display on store shelves, but businesses can ship their products more efficiently too.

Building & Chemical
Essential for keeping both contents and users safe and protected, pouch packaging’s chemical-resistant substrates have a key role to play in this industry, delivering leak-proof security on the move and across labs and other sites.

Retort Pouch
For soups, sauces, ready meals, rice, tuna and wet pet food that need a long, ambient shelf life, our Retort Pouch offers a lighter, more space-efficient alternative to tins, glass jars and traditional mixed-material retort pouches.
Retort pouches are filled, sealed and then sterilised at high temperature under pressure, so products can be stored at room temperature without refrigeration. Because a pouch is much thinner than a can or jar, heat reaches the centre of the product faster, which can shorten processing times and help preserve taste, colour and texture. Once on shelf, they are lighter to ship, quicker to open and easier to store than rigid alternatives.
Traditional retort pouches use multi-layer laminates, often combining PET and aluminium foil, which can’t be separated and are not recyclable. Our high-barrier Retort Pouch is a mono-material structure, independently certified against Interzero’s Made for Recycling criteria and designed in line with CEFLEX guidelines, so it is recycle-ready wherever flexible packaging collection exists.
It’s available as pre-made stand-up or flat-based pouches, or as reel film for your own filling lines, with an easy-tear opening so no scissors are needed. Printed in up to 9 colours, with matt or registered matt varnish options, it gives long-life products the shelf presence of a premium pack.

Spout Pouch
For yoghurts, fruit purées, baby food, soups, stocks and sauces, as well as household refills, our recyclable Spout Pouches combine easy pouring with resealability, at home and on the go.
Made from a mono-material PE structure, our recyclable spout pouch range is independently certified against Interzero’s Made for Recycling criteria, and uses significantly less plastic than rigid plastic containers.
Each pouch can be built around your product and your customers. Corner spouts allow controlled pouring, with a choice of spout sizes and caps, including a choke-proof cap for products aimed at children, such as fruit pouches and yoghurts. Carry handles can be added to pouches of 1 litre and above, and flat-bottom spout pouches are available up to 5 litres, with side gussets for extra stability and branding space. Small-format spout pouches suit baby food and single portions, while hot-fill versions are available for products filled warm.
